Confession: I cut my husband’s hair.

This post is sponsored by Global Influence, but this tale of my adventures with my husband’s hair is all my own.

I haven’t had a hair cut in, oh, 5 months?! The hairstylist in me is so ashamed of myself. My husband is more on top of his hair than I am about mine, how sad it that? I suppose that’s how it’s got to be when you sport such a short hairstyle as my husband does. To combat the thin/fine hair that he was blessed with, we keep it nice and short. But, it wasn’t always that way.

DIY Men's Fade Haircut

When I started dating my husband I had no idea what a “high and tight” was. At the time, I was doing your typical men’s cuts in the salon but it was rare that I had someone in the military in my chair. Not many guys who need their hair cut as often as military men do want to spend $25+ a pop.

Then, my husband asked me to cut his hair for his upcoming drill weekend. Great, my favorite kind of haircut. I got good at a “high and tight” real fast.

Once he was officially out of the Guard, I suggested he let it grow out. I had only ever seen him with it all buzzed, I was curious what he would look like. We compromised on a mohawk. I miss that mohawk. And sadly, there is little photo documentation of said mohawk.

Mohawk

After college, it was time he got a more serious look. Not many precincts want to hire a cop with a mohawk. Back to the “high and tight” it was.

Can I just mention how hard it is to find photos of your husband’s hair when he’s ALWAYS wearing a baseball cap? Goodness gracious.

DIY Men's Fade Haircut

Nowadays, I do more of a short “fade”. It’s quick and easy. His darn beard trim takes longer for me to do than the entire haircut, I swear. If you want to give it a go and try it on your own husband (or boyfriend, if he’s willing to risk looking ridiculous if it goes awry), follow the guide above and cut from shortest to longest, 1-3. Then blend, blend, BLEND. It’s pretty simple, as long as you have a little experience with a clippers and you aren’t going from super short to pretty long like the current men’s hair trend: the undercut.

Once you’ve got the cut under control, then it’s all about maintenance and care. Dove/Walmart have created the “Good Hair Guide” where you can find tips and recommendations for common men’s hair issues. The Thickening Fortifying Shampoo is perfect for my husband’s hair type.

  1. Saw your link on Pinterest and had to click through. I think it is great you do your husband’s haircuts at home. You have a system and it works for you and you are both happy with it. I tried giving haircuts to my two boys at home as they had been getting poorly done haircuts at the barbershop. Well it was tougher than I thought, I got flustered and had my husband finish them. Not a loss though as he did an awesome job and continues to give my boys their haircuts every 3-4 weeks. And he has gotten really good at doing them. He first few were goo, but last night at a school function, my son’s teacher came up to us and complimented how nice my son’s haircut looked and wanted to know where he had it cut. When I told him my husband does their haircuts, he was impressed. He said he does very nice work and that he sees the children every day and he sees the children come to school with some really bad haircuts from the barbershop as well as by parents. So I feel that I am not a “bad parent “ because we give my boys their haircuts at home, as I had mentioned it to an acquaintance a number of years back and she told me I was selfish, lazy and cheap, and I should take them to a “licensed professional” and pay for decent haircuts. I don’t want to sound smug, but there are many things people can do themselves at home and get great results. And it does save me hundreds of dollars a year.
