DIY Christmas Village Houses: Thrift Store Upcycle Project
If you’ve been to a thrift store during the holiday season, or lets be honest, almost any time of the year, chances are you have seen a plethora of various ceramic houses.
Some of them plug in and light up, some of them are made for a votive candle.
All of them are, in my opinion, pretty boring and sometimes downright ugly.
I picked up five ceramic houses from my local thrift store for just under $5 (they were half off!) and brought them home for a sparkly pastel makeover.
Here’s how you can make your own white and pastel light up Christmas village! But first…
Where can I find Christmas village houses to paint?
I’m a big fan of purchasing from the thrift store because of the eco-friendly angle.
If you don’t have a thrift store in your area, I’ve also seen affordable houses at…
- the dollar store
- Walmart or Target
- the hardware store
- Amazon (this set is a bit more but it comes with 4 houses and 18 accessories)
- Ebay
I was given supplies from DecoArt to complete this project. All opinions are my own.

- Paint Brush
Instructions
- Give the houses a coat or two of semi gloss spray paint until all of the old colors are covered. Let it dry thoroughly.
- Using various colors of pastel DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paint, give the houses some accents. I stuck with primarily one color per house so they didn't get too crazy. If there were any greenery on the houses, I painted them all the same mint green color. Let dry thoroughly.
- Using a complimentary color, paint directly over the pastel color with DecoArt Glamour Dust Glitter Paint. All of the snow areas on my houses got a coat of the Ice Crystal Glamour Dust.

Once your houses are all pretty and painted, you might be wondering…
What do I use to light up my Christmas village?
There are a few options that you can consider when making your houses light up (if they didn’t come with their own light set up).
I don’t like having an open flame around the house, so these options are all going to need some sort of power source.
- Battery operated votive candles
- White string lights (I like ones with a clear cord like these)
- Battery operated LED fairy lights
This was such an easy DIY and I think the results are pretty great!
This is amazing! I love how you took something old and made it beautiful!
