DIY Dollar Tree Halloween Plastic Skull Planters
When I saw some mini plastic skulls at our local Dollar Tree, I instantly knew what I wanted to do with them for Halloween.
Technically they were supposed to be mini treat buckets but I had other plans.
I picked up a few other Halloween decorations to help complete this project, and it was probably the cheapest and quickest Halloween decor DIY I have ever done.
DIY Dollar Tree Halloween Plastic Skull Planters
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- Spray paint
- Dollar Tree plastic mini skull buckets
- Dollar Tree black flowers
- Optional: hot glue and hot glue gun
Step One: Prepare your skulls
Remove the plastic handle from your skulls. I was easily able to pop them off by hand.
Step Two: Spray paint your skulls
Using your spray paint of choice, give the skulls a coat of spray paint.
I wanted my mini skulls to have a matte look, so I played around with a few different spray paint finishes as an experiment.
At my store I was only able to get white in Ultra Matte, black in Satin, and aqua in Gloss, so I also picked up a can of Matte clear coat to cancel out the glossy finish of the aqua.
In the end, the black satin spray paint dried slightly shinier than the white Ultra Matte and the aqua with the Matte clear coat over top.
I’m a new fan of the Rustoleum Ultra Matte finish!
Step Three: Prepare the flowers
Take your dollar store flowers and cut the blooms off the stems using a scissors.
Leave a bit of stem so that the flower bloom doesn’t come apart.
Step Four: Insert the flowers
Put one flower bloom in each of the skull tops.
You can use hot glue during this step if you want to make them stick permanently.
Mine stuck really well by just pushing them in, so I skipped the hot glue.
Eventually (meaning when I pull them out of storage next Halloween) if they are falling out and making a mess I’ll secure them more. But so far, so good! 😉
And that’s it!
This project was literally the easiest and quickest dollar tree Halloween decoration craft project I have ever done. And I am loving how they looking on our front entry shelf.
Pick up some mini plastic skull buckets today and paint them in your Halloween colors of your choice!
