Goodbyes are always bittersweet. We moved last December, but to keep some sort of regularity for my “change gives me severe anxiety” ridden child I kept her in the same preschool for the rest of the school year. Unfortunately that meant spending over an hour commuting each day she has school (womp, womp).

It’s hard to imagine that Bean will soon be ending her time at Pumpkin Patch Preschool. I can’t put to words what a blessing the teachers have been for both Bean and I. To thank them, I’m putting together a gift that I know practically every teacher will love. Many mornings at drop off I catch her teachers with coffee cups in hand, so I know they will love these!

But really, what teacher doesn’t like coffee?

End of Year Teacher Gift for the Coffee Lover

You’ll need…

  • Fabric
  • Elastic
  • Large button
  • Coffee cup sleeve (to use as a pattern, if you don’t have one on hand as I didn’t)
  • Paper coffee cup
  • Air soluable fabric marker
  • Dunkin’ Donuts® Coffee Creamer Singles
  • Not pictured: felt, scissors, sewing machine/thread, sewing pins

STEP ONE
Using the coffee sleeve as a pattern, place the front of the sleeve face down on the wrong side of the fabric and trace around with your fabric marker. This will serve as your guide when you move to the sewing machine.

STEP TWO
Leaving about 1/4″ for seam allowance, cut out 3 pieces of fabric: one for the front, one for the inside, one piece of felt as the liner.

STEP THREE
Layer the fabric as follows: felt on bottom, outside piece with the right side up, inside piece with the wrong side up. The top piece of fabric should have the guides for sewing. Pin them together.

STEP FOUR
Using a sewing machine (or by hand if you prefer), sew along the guides leaving one end open.

STEP FIVE
Flip the sleeve so that the right sides of the fabric are now facing out. Cut about a 2″ piece of elastic and insert it into the open end, folding the fabric inside so that the ends look finished. Secure with sewing pins.

STEP SIX
Top stitch around the entire sleeve leaving about a 1/8″ border. This will secure the elastic and help flatten the sleeve.

STEP SEVEN
Hand sew a button onto the outside of the sleeve. I used the elastic to measure where I needed to put the button to ensure that the sleeve would fit snug onto practically any coffee cup. As I was sewing the button I also made sure that my stitches did not poke through to the bottom layer of fabric.
