Easy, Durable, and Cheap DIY Glitter Shoes Tutorial
What do you do when you are in need of a very specific color of heels but can’t find any that don’t make your stomach turn?
Behold, my DIY glitter heels.
I needed purple shoes for my Halloween costume. I already had a pair of heels collecting dust in my closet from a previous Halloween costume (Alice in Wonderland, so original) so this was the perfect opportunity to save money and breathe new life into some old shoes.
DIY Glitter Heels
Materials
- High Heels
- Gloss Finish Mod Podge
- Extra Fine Glitter
Tools
- Paint Brush
- Sandpaper (optional)
Instructions
- If your shoe has a very shiny finish, you can lightly sand it with some fine grit sand paper to help the Mod Podge adhere. This is what I did with my shoes just in case.
- Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge all over your shoes being careful not to let any drip inside the shoe along the edges.
- Sprinkle the shoes with glitter. Don't be afraid to make sure it is very well covered! Gently tap to remove any excess glitter.
- Let dry for about an hour.
- If there are any bare spots, repeat steps 2-3. I ended up doing 2 coats on mine.
- Once your shoe is completely dry and you're happy with the coverage, give the shoes a final coat of Mod Podge.
They were very easy to make. If I had another reason to wear blinged-out shoes I would totally make another pair. I sense a remake coming on…
These photos were taken AFTER a crazy night, they’re really durable!
Because these shoes were originally cheap patent leather I thought for sure that the glitter would chip off like crazy. Boy, was I proven wrong.
Not a chip or scratch in them after a Halloween night out on the town.
Do you have a pair of shoes at home that could use a coat of glitter and Mod Podge? What sort of occasion could you picture yourself wearing shoes like this to? Weddings? Parties? Let me know in the comment section below!

Loving the glitter shoes! This makes me sad that I recently gave away plain heels that I could have done this with. This tutorial probably works really well with flats and wedges and such, too!
