When putting finishing touches on your home, it seems that the bathroom is one of the last spots to get any attention. According to a random study, we spend 1.5 years of our lifetime in the bathroom. That’s a long time to spend in a bland and lifeless space.
One of the last spots in our home waiting to be decked out was our guest bathroom.
We (meaning I, hehe) decided on a “manly” theme since it’s the bathroom my husband uses most. I’ve got a beautiful, deep navy blue paint color waiting to go on the walls and a tiny bit of decor up, but the shower curtain was in need of help.
I, like so many other people, am a big fan of high end bohemian inspired home decor. But I am definitely not a fan of the price tag.
I thought to myself, “Hey, I know how to use my sewing machine to sew a straight line. I should just whip one up myself!”
My inspiration high end store bought shower curtains were in the $100+ range. They were white with some beautiful floral appliques. Super cute but a little too girly for what we were going for in the guest bath. And seriously, $100+ for a shower curtain?! Nope.
My version came to a grand total of: $12.99 for both the thrifted sheet and embroidered fabric (bought on sale!)

Step One
This is quite possibly the most important step in this process. Wash your thrifted sheet using a high quality, odor-fighting detergent like Persil laundry detergent.
I made sure to pre-treat with the detergent by rubbing it in and letting it sit for a few minutes on some stains in the sheet.
I always use Persil laundry detergent because it has enzymes that break down stains and built-in odors (which are a-plenty in thrifted goods!) I have found through personal experience that it’s my favorite detergent EVER!
The sheet came out super clean and super white. I was nervous about it matching the fabric I was going to use but the Persil laundry detergent got my thrifted sheet looking practically brand new!
Step Two
Once your thrifted sheet is clean and odor-free, lay it out with your old shower curtain on top as a template. Trim around the sheet leaving a 3″ allowance for the top and 1.5″ for each side.
I used one edge that already had a seam and the bottom of the sheet as it was to cut down on the amount of sewing.
Step Three
Fold each side that you will be hemming over twice. For the top, you will fold over 1.5″ and then another 1.5″ and pin to secure. For the sides, fold over .75″ and then another .75″ and pin to secure.
Once you have all of your edges pinned, sew with your sewing machine.
Step Four
To create a high end bohemian inspired but not too girly look (since this was going in our “manly” themed guest bathroom), I layed out my diamond embroidered fabric in 3 rows: 1 thicker and 2 thinner.
Secure with pins and then attach with your sewing machine with a row of stitches at the top of the fabric.
Step Five
I wanted even more texture along the edges, so I sliced the embroidered fabric every few inches up to the seam and distressed the edges with my scissors.
Step Six
Lay your shower curtain template on top and using the disappearing ink marker, draw a line where each buttonhole should be.
Step Seven
Using your buttonhole maker foot on your sewing machine, sew a buttonhole at each of the marks that you made in the last step.
CAREFULLY open the hole with a seam ripper making sure you don’t cut through the very top and very bottom of each buttonhole.
Step Eight
Insert your shower curtain hooks through the buttonholes and enjoy your handiwork!
I learned a few things while completing this project. First, Persil laundry detergent is still my favorite. Second, my sewing machine is not as scary as I thought it was. Third, I can’t wait to paint the bathroom walls.
If you’re doing any sort of thrifted projects with textiles like sheets or fabric, or if you found some great scores in the clothing department, make sure you have your Persil laundry detergent. In my experience there’s nothing better at getting that thrifted smell and stains out.
Head on down to your local Target to pick some Persil laundry detergent up! And make sure you subscribe to Bre Pea to see how the deep and moody navy blue walls turn out…
