Can you believe that Valentine’s Day is already next weekend?! I’m excited that we finally have it on a day this year that I don’t work all night so my husband and I can actually enjoy it together 🙂 We haven’t made official plans yet, but I’m hoping we get out somewhere so that I can wear my recent favorite makeup look: a bold red lip. Nothing says “Valentine’s Day” like a red lip, right?
I’ve gone back and forth with red lipstick. Sometimes I like it, sometimes it really intimidates me. I have found that when a shade goes well with my skin tone, I feel more confident wearing it. The shades that feel just a little “off” usually end up with me taking it off right away. Luckily, I have discovered the trick to finding just the right shade for my skin tone!
I used my techniques for selecting the perfect shade of red while I was shopping for some new makeup at Walmart. I picked up a few supplies to experiment on a new look with, and headed home to play around. Playing with makeup is way too fun 😉
I started with a freshly applied foundation, brows, and of course my contouring. I got to experiment with this Maybelline The Blushed Nudes eyeshadow palette. I was so excited to try it because I am already in LOVE with their The Nudes palette. I bought it after seeing how expensive a currently popular nude eyeshadow palette cost compared to theirs. Trust me, save your money and buy this one, it is just as gorgeous! The blushed nudes are infused with rose gold pigments for bold shades of plum, blush, and rose. It really brings the brown out of my eyes.
Next I used my day to day technique for a cat eye look. I am still in love with this eyeliner trend. I will be that grandma rocking a cat eye, I guarantee it.
I finished my eyes with a few coats of this Maybelline Falsies Push Up Drama mascara. The brush has cup-shaped bristles that help swoop and lift your lashes. It really gripped my lashes as I applied the mascara!
Finally, I finished my look with this gorgeous shade of red lipstick. I used Maybelline ColorSensational Lip Colour in Red Revival. I LOVE this lipstick. It goes on super smooth thanks to the nourishing honey nectar, and the color is super rich and deep.
Not sure which shade of red would be right for you to recreate this look? Check out my handy, dandy guide below…
How do you know if you’re a warm or a cool? Take a look at the veins on the underside of your arm. If they appear more purple/blue in color, you’re a cool. If they appear more green, you’re a warm. Simple as that!
I’ve got medium skin but I’m on the cool side, so I went for Red Revival because it has hints of pink. Anything with orange tones in it makes me look like a clown.
Now you can be armed and ready to approach the section of red lipsticks that can sometimes be a tad overwhelming.
Make sure to stop in at your local Walmart (don’t forget my guide!) and look for the Maybelline endcap to pick up your supplies for your Valentine’s Day date!

Thank you! For some reason red intimidates me, must be how eye-catching it is!
