An open letter to style bloggers.

An open letter to style bloggers from a mommy blogger.

Dear Style Bloggers (or is it more politically correct to call you “Fashion Bloggers”?),

How do you do it? How do you find the time and motivation to get all done up each and every day, take photos of yourself, edit those photos, and post them online?

First, let me address the fact that you are indeed picking out a perfectly accessorized outfit and doing your hair and makeup every single day. Most days I’m lucky if I make it out of my sweatpants let alone even think about accessorizing. Does my daughter’s hair tie that she yanks from her head every time I futily attempt to put a pony tail in and inevitably end up wearing on my wrist count as an accessory? That’s technically a bracelet, right?

Second, let’s talk about taking photos of yourself. How in the heck do you get over that awkwardness? I did it, once, and I’m not sure I have it in me to do it again. If you’re not taking them yourself, how did you con someone into enduring public embarrassment and risk getting hit by a car? That is, if you’re taking them in the middle of the road like all of the other style bloggers. And what’s going on just beyond the frame of the camera that’s so darn funny?

Third, why don’t you use the restroom before you start your photo shoot? Pigeoned toes, legs pulled tightly together, sometimes they’re even crossed if you have to go real bad, I can tell the potty dance when I see it. Really, just use the potty before you start taking pictures. There might not be a bathroom in the middle of a busy intersection.

If you could enlighten this (mostly) stay at home mom as to how you manage to look so dang cute all the time, that would be greatly appreciated. Bonus points if you also have children, in which case I consider you Super Woman.

Sincerely,

The mom blogger currently sitting at her computer (during nap time) wearing sweatpants and an oversized t-shirt.

  1. To add to the request….please don't say… “its easy, just throw on whatever calls to you” because that just doesn't work!

  2. My biggest pet peeve is the unrealistic outfits they put together… I saw a skirt on a style blog and thought “oh that is cute!” I clicked the link and it took me to the shop. Said skirt was $200! What do you do that you can spend $200 on a skirt!? Also, where do you wear said skirt to? The fanciest place I am going is Target, with a 3 year old in tow behind me. I'm just sayin'… it's not practical.

  3. hrm. I use a tripod, usually. in my own room. but… the needing to wee thing is definitely something I hope to overcome one day.

  4. Sitting in my bathrobe and pajamas reading this during nap time. I would also like to know where they go looking like that…the Target employees give me a funny look when I don't show up my in yoga pants.

  5. I'd love to know as well! I often get the idea and always falls through. Hence why my few fashion post are mostly always edited through pixlemator, via copy and paste with website links. =) Ha I am still in my comfy's as well.

  6. that's funny! i'm in awe of them as well… but, wouldn't it be funny to have a video of them running from the camera to their pose before the self-timer goes off?

  7. HEHEHE Bre!! This is great. I love your raw honesty, and I completely agree. I have days where my clothes look cute, or my hair, or my makeup, but rarely all three. I constantly have people telling me, you should blog your outfits, but I haven't taken the plunge to do so yet. I realized, after reading what you said, it's the fear of judgement…people thinking, um, seriously? Well…I believe we've just got to get over that fear that plagues all of us from time to time…that we aren't good enough. I've played the comparing game WAY too many times and am finally at the point in my life when I've realized it's just dumb!! I think you're beautiful and would love to see you post some fashion pics. Thanks for making me realize I'm not the only one out there that feels this way, and inspiring me to get over my fear!

  8. Bahahah — totally just cracked up. I've often wondered some of the exact same things! On the days I actually do dress nicely, I've thought about blogging the outfit, but have NO idea how to do what they do out in public. I think I'd be bright red with embarrassment in every picture…

  9. Thank you, Liz 🙂 I suppose the saying is true, there will always be people better/smarter/funnier/whatever than you, and there will always be people worse than you. Comparison is truly the thief of joy.

  10. hahaha i wonder the same thing every time I look at some of the fashion blogs I follow….Then I realized that almost all of them have no children. haha! I have a crazy one year old that keeps me busy so most of the time i don't have time to even get dressed out of my pjs. lol

  11. I had a style blog a while back and lost my mojo when I got pregnant. My son is now 5 months old and I'm trying to get things going again. This post made me laugh! I look at those poses and occasionally think, “What is wrong with these girls?” To tell the truth, the more I took pics, the more fun it became. To get over the awkwardness, I usually played with my dogs and didn't look directly at the camera. With the new blog, my focus of one segment called Quick Pic, is actually on the subject of trying to step it up a notch as a SAHM. I'm planning on posting the introduction to that segment sometime today. We don't always have time for hair and make up, but we can still find small ways to have fun 🙂 And about your sign off note, I usually change out of pj's and into athletic shorts just before dh comes home from work so I look like I tried lol

  12. Haha! That was totally me on my back porch! In the summer, Id be like: it's too hot I'll just post that sweaty pic so I can go back inside.
