How to Plop Your Curly Hair

When summer and warmer temps roll around, so does the crazy humidity. If you have any bit of natural wave to your hair, you can pretty much kiss your flat iron goodbye for a couple months. Why fight the waves when you can embrace them? You may have heard the recent buzz around “plopping”. The name sounds like it could be a personal health issue, but in reality it’s my new favorite way to style my naturally wavy hair.
This is what happens when you style your hair with a curling iron and get stuck in a soaking rain. Whomp, whomp. If I would have “plopped” my hair, the rain would have just added to my fun curls! It’s time I learn how to give my hair a good “plop”.
STEP ONE
Start with clean and freshly shampooed/conditioned hair. I used new products from the John Frieda® Beach Blondeâ„¢ Collection. Being a former hair stylist, I’m a bit of a product snob. I’m also a sucker for any product that smells like mint. I can honestly say I loved how my hair felt after using these. With my hair being thin and platinum blonde hair, it usually snags pretty easily. I was surprised at how well I could comb through it afterwards. But don’t get me wrong, it would work wonders on any hair color.
STEP TWO
Apply your curly hair product of choice. Mine is the new Beach Blondeâ„¢Sea Wavesâ„¢ Sea Salt Spray. Its coconut scent smells AH-MAY-ZING, it’s infused with natural sea salt for tousled texture, it doesn’t leave my hair feeling crunchy, and it gives my curls just the kick it needs.
STEP THREE
Lay out your cotton plopping device of choice, in my case this giant cotton t-shirt, on a flat surface.
STEP FOUR
“Plop” your hair (hence the name) towards the bottom of your shirt, or whatever cotton fabric you’re using. I made sure that I gently coiled my hair on top of itself to help enhance the curl.
STEP FIVE
Fold the top half of the shirt over the back of your head, and then wrap each side of the shirt away from your face and secure with a clip.
STEP SIX
Look EXTRA COOL while you let your plopped hair dry. The length of time that you leave the shirt on your head will depend on how much you want to emphasize your curls and how thick your hair is (some people even sleep with their “plop” on). The thicker your hair is, the longer you’ll need to leave it on. The more curly you want your hair, the longer you’ll have to leave it on. I left mine on for about 3 hours and…
…boom! I don’t think I have ever seen my hair this bouncy and naturally curly before!
I went to bed with my hair looking like this. When I woke up the next day, my husband asked,
“Do you like what your hair looks like the day after?”
and I answered, thinking it looked like a frizzy, crazy mess, “I have no idea what it looks like, but I’m a little scared to see…” although it still smelled delicious, even the next day 😉
If my face didn’t look like a butt without makeup on I would have taken a photo because even after a night of tossing and turning (I’m always a restless sleeper) my hair looked amazing! That Sea Salt Spray is going to be my best friend this summer, I just know it.

If you’re looking for an easy summer ‘do, pick up some John Frieda® Beach Blondeâ„¢ Collection products on your next trip to Target (you know you never leave with just the things you planned on buying at Target anyway, right?) and give “plopping” a try.

That turned out so, so cute!
Thanks Chelsea 🙂 I was surprised at how curly it got my long hair! You should give it a try!
I need to try this! I've heard so much about plopping lately. I have naturally curly hair but I blow it out & curl it with a flat iron all the time. It's getting to be the time of year where it's too hot though. Might be time to finally try this & embrace my curls. You look cute!
I've never heard of plopping, but I am loving the result! Now I am going to have to definitely give this a try! #client
