DIY Pottery Barn Knock Off Velvet Holiday Table Runner

I see all kinds of grand holiday entertaining tablescapes start to pop up in my Pinterest feed this time of year. I think to myself, “I don’t know if I’m capable of pulling something like that together.” or “That looks like it took a lot of time, energy, and money. Not for me.“

I’m here to say, I was totally underestimating my thriftiness and creativity because I DID IT! I pulled together a knock off Pottery Barn velvet table runner complete with decor and holiday party supplies for well under 30 bucks.

You just have to know how to take full advantage of a few thrifty tricks I’ve discovered…

To complete the holiday entertaining look, I finished off the table with some decorative Dixie Ultra® Holiday Plates, white Vanity Fair® Everyday Napkins, and refreshing Canada Dry® Ginger Ale drinks. Because that’s what I’m all about, simple and EASY holiday party prep. No holiday dishware that the host gets stuck washing while everyone else is having fun. No million-ingredient punch that takes too much time and effort to make.

Seeing this table all put together makes me so excited for the holiday party season! We had just moved into our new house right before Christmas last year so I didn’t get the opportunity to host. This year will be different and I can’t wait!

Let’s backtrack and talk a little more about the table runner. I fell in love with a velvet table runner on the Pottery Barn website, but I could not stomach the thought of spending close to $100 bucks. I knew there must be a way that I could do it myself. So I did!

DIY Pottery Barn Knock Off Velvet Table Runner

You’ll need…

• 2 1/2 yards of upholstery velvet (or more if your table is extra long)
• Heavy duty thread in the same color of your fabric
• Upholstery needle for your sewing machine
• Sewing pins
• Sharp fabric scissors
• Clear sewing ruler

STEP ONE

Measure out a piece of the upholstery velvet to fit your table. My table is 82″ long and 45″ wide. I used a piece of fabric that was 90″ in length and 19″ wide. I once heard that a good rule of thumb for table runners was that they’re 1/3 the width of the table, so I went with that for width. I also wanted a good 2″ all around for seam allowance.

STEP TWO

Using the sewing pins and clear sewing rule, fold the fabric over 2″ and place a sewing pin to secure it. Repeat this all around the fabric. For the corners, tuck in the edge and fold at a 90 degree angle. I had more than enough seam allowance, but I had never worked with upholstery velvet before and wanted room for error.

STEP THREE

Flip the fabric over and sew a straight line leaving a 3/4″ seam allowance. As you work around, make sure you remove the sewing pins. When you get to the corner, stop 3/4″ shy of the edge with the needle in the fabric, lift the presser foot, turn the fabric at 90 degrees, lower the presser foot, and resume.

STEP FOUR

Trim off all excess thread, and enjoy!

To dress up my Pottery Barn knock off table runner, I used some thrifted Christmas decor that cost a total of $4.95. I love pre-Christmas thrift store sales, I got it all 50% off! Check out your local thrift store’s discount calendar to see when you can find deals like that for yourself.

Grand total for the upholstery velvet (amount used for the runner) + thread + upholstery needle… $15.99.

That’s 1/4 the price of the Pottery Barn version! Just make sure that you use a craft store coupon to get 50% off your fabric. Another little secret: at some craft stores you can use multiple coupons in one transaction. I had three 50% off coupons so I also got the needle and thread at a discount. Also, because the fabric was so wide I have enough left over to make another!

Once you have your velvet table runner, set the table with your Dixie Ultra Holiday Plates, Vanity Fair napkins, and refreshing Canada Dry Ginger Ale drinks.

I let out an audible, “Oh, how cute!” when I saw the new winter holiday designs of the Dixie paper plates. Not only are they adorable, they are strong. No need for those plastic paper plate holders that looked like flowers we had when I was a kid. You can find these for yourself in the holiday seasonal section at Target.

I like to use the Vanity Fair paper napkins when we’re hosting because they’re just a bit more dressy than the usual paper napkin, plus they’re a lot softer.

An easy, go-to drink for holiday entertaining is Canada Dry Ginger Ale with a splash of cranberry juice. It’s crisp and refreshing, plus it puts a simple twist on holiday drinks with the cranberry color.
