Thrift Store Christmas Decor: Vintage Tree Makeover
Keep your eye out while you’re at the thrift store for any vintage Christmas decor like this wooden mini Christmas tree. It’s very easy to give it new life with just a few supplies!
I am a SUCKER for vintage wooden Christmas ornaments. So you can imagine how I reacted to seeing a mini vintage wooden Christmas tree complete with mini vintage wooden Christmas ornaments at the thrift store this past fall.
I died… and then I bought it for $4.99 😉
Die-hard vintage lovers might kill me over this, but I wasn’t in love with the original look. The second I spotted it I could imagine how adorable it would look with a more pastel color scheme.
Giving it a tiny makeover was super easy and it made my heart happy knowing every ornament (and the star for the top that had broken off) now had a home after some itty bitty repairs.
Thrift Store Christmas Decor: Vintage Tree Makeover Supplies
- Thrifted Vintage Christmas Tree Decoration
- Acrylic Craft Paint
- Paint Brushes
- 18 Gauge Craft Wire
- Needle Nose pliers
- Super Glue
Step One
Disassemble the tree and give it a few coats of white paint. Let dry thoroughly between coats.
Step Two
Give the star for the top of the tree and the base a few coats of gold acrylic paint. Let dry thoroughly between coats.
Step Three
Add back any designs that you liked that the tree had before. I liked the outline it had, so I decided to put it back on the tree but with gold acrylic paint to match the star and the base.
Step Four
Decide which new paint colors will replace the current colors on the ornaments. I replaced red with pink, green with mint, yellow with pastel yellow, and blue with pastel aqua.
Carefully paint the ornaments replacing the colors.
Step Five
My tree was missing three hooks, so I took some wire and shaped it into the same shape as the former hooks with a needle nose pliers. I secured the hooks in the tree with some super glue.
I also used the super glue to reattach the star to the top of the tree.
You might not have something exactly like my mini wooden Christmas tree at home, but the principles I used to give this thrift store Christmas decor a makeover could be applied to many things!
When you’re out thrifting, just keep in mind this simple rule: if it’s got good bones, paint can update the look of nearly anything!
I am in LOVE with how it turned out. Yes, I could have kept it the original colors. But since I was already doing some repairs on it and since I already felt validated in rescuing it from the thrift store I was willing to take a chance on updating the color scheme.
I just know that this previously forgotten thrift store Christmas decor relic will be forever treasured in our home 🙂 And this is why I love thrifting soooo darn much!
