Trying my best to fill my Mom’s shoes

I had the best childhood.

My mom was a (mostly) stay at home mom and my dad worked a (mostly) typical 9 to 5, Monday through Friday job, despite a few lay-offs over the course of my childhood (which I was vaguely aware of).

I have so many good memories of going to the park, coming home from school to freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, and family trips to the cabin up north.

Did we do a lot of traveling? No.

Did we do a lot of shopping? No.

Did we have chores in order to earn our allowance? Yep.

Were all three of us kids involved in very expensive activities? Yes.

Did my parents do everything they could so that we could be involved in whatever activities we wanted? You betcha.

As a kid I remember thinking, “My Mom/Dad is so mean! (Insert name of random friend) doesn’t have to do chores! They make me work for my allowance! They won’t let me do whatever I want!”

Upon moving out when I got my first “adult” job, I quickly learned that my “mean parents” did me a huge favor.

I’m willing to bet that Bean will have the same thoughts as a child. And you know what I’m going to tell her? You’re going to thank me later. Muah ah ah!

I think that you can’t help but be influenced by your parents as to how you parent, whether it be in a good or a bad way.
Luckily, I feel as though both myself and my husband have such awesome role models to look up to as parents. I only hope that I can be half the mother to my Bean as my mother was to me.
Ok, not literally, but you know what I mean. I have big shoes to fill.

  1. We almost had the same childhood, Bre, Now, that I'm old and have gray hair, hahaha…I fully understand my mom. Oh, I miss them now that they're not around anymore.

  2. Aw, you had great parents! My childhood was very much the same, and my parents like yours. I guess it was a generational thing 🙂

  3. I remember I thought the same of My Mom whenever She's pull out those over controlling over protective shoes on Me, hehe! But I feel guilty now actually understanding the hardships She had to go through raising 4 girls practically on Her Own!
I may have at one point said I won't ever be her, but I really just hope I get to be half as good as Her when the time comes 🙂
    Lovely post, Bre!
